ULTIMATE PROTECTION FOR SPRAY VACCINATION

Spray-Vac® Poultry Spray Vaccine Stabilizer

Protect Your Vaccine Investment

Spray-Vac® is a vaccine stabilizer developed by Animal Science Products to help protect the viability of poultry vaccines administered through spray vaccination systems.

Water quality plays an important role in maintaining live vaccine stability. Chlorine and other oxidizers, pH imbalance, and low tonicity can threaten vaccine viability during preparation and application.

Spray-Vac addresses these three water-quality challenges, helping poultry producers prepare stabilized spray solutions using suitable tap or well water rather than relying exclusively on distilled water.

Protecting Vaccines From Three Water-Quality Threats

The water used to prepare poultry spray vaccines can affect vaccine stability. Even distilled water may present challenges related to pH and low tonicity.

Spray-Vac® is formulated to address three important water-quality threats that can compromise vaccine viability.

Oxidizers

Protecting Live Vaccines From Chlorine

Chlorine and other oxidizing compounds in water can damage live vaccine organisms.

Spray-Vac helps protect vaccines from chlorine-related inactivation, allowing suitable chlorinated water to be used in spray vaccine preparation.

pH Imbalance

Helping Maintain a More Suitable pH

Water that is too acidic or too alkaline can threaten vaccine stability.

Spray-Vac contains a buffering system designed to adjust spray-solution pH toward a more suitable range for vaccine preservation.

Low Tonicity

Supporting the Stability of Fragile Vaccine Organisms

Low-tonicity water can create osmotic stress for fragile vaccine organisms, particularly live whole-cell bacterial vaccines.

Spray-Vac helps correct spray-solution tonicity to reduce this threat to vaccine stability.

How Spray-Vac Supports Vaccine Stability

Stabilizing the Water Before It Reaches the Vaccine

Maintaining vaccine viability during preparation and spray application begins with the quality of the water used as the diluent.

Spray-Vac® combines three stabilizing functions to help create a more suitable environment for fragile poultry vaccines.

Neutralizing Oxidizers

Spray-Vac protects live vaccine organisms from the damaging effects of chlorine in spray water. Research with infectious bronchitis and Newcastle disease vaccines demonstrated protection against chlorine-related reductions in live vaccine titers.

Buffering Water pH

Spray-Vac's buffering system helps adjust acidic or alkaline water toward a more suitable pH for vaccine stability.

Correcting Low Tonicity

Spray-Vac helps correct low-tonicity conditions that can threaten the integrity of fragile whole-cell bacterial vaccines.

One Stabilizer. Three Forms of Protection.

By addressing oxidizers, pH imbalance, and low tonicity together, Spray-Vac helps reduce important water-related threats to vaccine viability during poultry spray vaccination.

Research-Backed Vaccine Protection

Demonstrated Stability in Live Poultry Vaccines

Research conducted with live infectious bronchitis (IB) and Newcastle disease (ND) vaccines demonstrates the importance of protecting vaccine viability when chlorinated water is used for spray vaccination.

In controlled laboratory studies, Spray-Vac® helped maintain live vaccine titers in water containing chlorine, while unstabilized vaccine preparations experienced substantial reductions in viability.

The following studies illustrate how Spray-Vac performed under the specific experimental conditions tested.

Infectious Bronchitis Vaccine Stability

Live vaccine titers in water containing 4 ppm chlorine

3.0 3.5 4.0 4.5 5.0 log10 EID50 / dose 3.7 4.5 3.9 4.5 30 Minutes 120 Minutes Chlorine only Chlorine + Spray-Vac

Spray-Vac maintained the reported infectious bronchitis vaccine titer at approximately 104.5 EID50/dose at both time points.

Newcastle Disease Vaccine Stability

Live vaccine titers in water containing 4 ppm chlorine

4.0 4.5 5.0 5.5 6.0 log10 EID50 / dose ≤4.5 5.5 ≤4.5 5.2 30 Minutes 120 Minutes Chlorine only* Chlorine + Spray-Vac

Spray-Vac-treated vaccine maintained titers of 105.5 and 105.2 EID50/dose at 30 and 120 minutes, respectively.

*Unstabilized titers were at or below the study's lower quantification limit of 104.5. Gray bars show this limit, not exact measured titers. Source: Newcastle Vaccine Stability Improvement, p. 2, Study 1.

Spray-Vac Protection for Fragile Mycoplasma Vaccines

Supporting the Stability of Live Bacterial Vaccines

In addition to the viral vaccine research, Spray-Vac® has been evaluated for its ability to protect fragile live mycoplasma vaccines from water-related threats.

Research described in the Spray-Vac technical brochure examined the effects of chlorinated water on live mycoplasma vaccine stability.

The reported findings showed that chlorinated water without stabilizer inactivated the vaccine in less than 15 minutes, while Spray-Vac protected vaccine viability for at least 60 minutes under the experimental conditions.

Why Tonicity Matters

Live whole-cell bacterial vaccines can be particularly sensitive to low-tonicity water.

When the surrounding solution lacks sufficient electrolytes, water can enter bacterial cells through their membranes, potentially causing swelling and damage.

Spray-Vac helps correct low-tonicity conditions, providing a more suitable environment for fragile vaccine organisms.

Additional Research Into Frozen Mycoplasma Vaccines

ASP has also published research discussing the use of Spray-Vac in an experimental frozen mycoplasma vaccine preparation.

This research represents a separate application from routine spray vaccination and should not be interpreted as an established preparation method for commercially available frozen vaccines.

Spray-Vac® Benefits and Application

Designed to Support Live Poultry Spray Vaccination

Spray-Vac® is formulated to help protect live poultry vaccines from water-quality conditions that can affect vaccine stability during preparation and application.

Three Areas of Water-Quality Protection

  • Oxidizer Neutralization: Helps protect live vaccines from oxidizing agents such as chlorine in preparation water.

  • pH Buffering: Helps manage acidic or alkaline water conditions that may affect vaccine stability.

  • Tonicity Support: Provides electrolytes to help address low-tonicity conditions that can be particularly damaging to fragile live bacterial vaccines.

By addressing these three water-quality factors, Spray-Vac helps provide a more suitable environment for live vaccines during spray vaccination.
